Abbas Araghchi said Iran has received new messages from the United States regarding another round of negotiations aimed at ending the regional conflict, but warned that Tehran still doubts Washington’s seriousness.
Speaking on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi said Iran would enter negotiations if it becomes convinced the United States is prepared for what he described as a “fair and balanced” agreement.
He said disagreements over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile remain unresolved and could be pushed to later stages of negotiations. Araghchi also confirmed discussions with Russia regarding a proposal for Moscow to store Iranian enriched uranium.
The Iranian foreign minister welcomed diplomatic efforts by China, calling Beijing a strategic partner, while criticizing the United Arab Emirates over disputes surrounding a final BRICS statement linked to the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
The remarks came shortly after Donald Trump returned from talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where Iran and the future of the Strait of Hormuz were among the key issues discussed.
Trump said after the meeting that both Washington and Beijing agreed Iran should not obtain nuclear weapons and stressed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to global trade and energy shipments.
The latest diplomatic signals come as regional tensions remain high despite a fragile ceasefire following weeks of confrontation involving Iran, Israel, Gulf states and US forces across the Middle East.
