Afghan forces thwart terror plot by militant from Tajikistan

Tajik militant Afghanistan2The Afghan national security forces arrested a foreign insurgent during an operation in central Logar province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said the insurgent originally hails from neighboring Tajikistan and was arrested while he was looking to carry out attack in northern Kunduz province.

A statement by MoI said the insurgent has been identified as Sheraz Omarova and was recently deployed to Afghanistan after receiving insurgency trainings in North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan.

The statement further added that Omarova was trained for a period of four months in North Waziristan and was identified by the operatives of Criminal Investigation Department of Ministry of Interior.

According to the Ministry of Interior Omarova was looking to move to northern Kunduz province where he could carry out insurgency activities.

This comes as the Afghan security forces arrested at least three al-Qaeda operatives during an operation in Kunduz province earlier in the month of November last year.

The three al-Qaeda operatives who were detained during the operation also hailed from the neighboring Tajikistan.

According to the MoI officials majority of the foreign militants are trained in Pakistan’s North Waziristan tribal region and are sent to Afghanistan to carry out attacks.
