Wednesday, 13 July – According to senior local officials, Afghan security forces on Tuesday have arrested several suspects in connection with the assassination of Ahmad Wali Karzai.
Ahmad Wali Karzai was chief provincial council of Kandahar province and younger brother of Afghan president Hamid Karzai.
Ahmad Wali Karzai was assassinated by his own private body guard at his home early Tuesday morning.
In a joint press conference together with acting police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq, Toryalai Weesa, governor of Kandahar province said, Sardar Mohammad, private body of guard of Ahmad Wali Karzai assassinated him at his home early Tuesday morning around 11:30 am.
Acting police chief of Kandahar province Gen. Abdul Raziq said, Sardar Mohammad had served as Wali Karzai’s private body guard for the last seven years and was a trustworthy security guard.
It is said that Sardar Mohammad and his family are residents of Karz village in Dand district. The family have been responsible for security at the tomb of Abdul Ahad Khan, Afghan president Hamid Karzai’s father.
Gen. Raziq further added, Ahmad Wali Karzai’s security guard entered his room with a letter and a pistol in his hand.
He also said, “His body guard shot him twice while Ahmad Wali Karzai was coming out of his bathroom, without any conversation passing between the two.”
“He was shot two bullets, one in his head and other in his chest. Mohammad Sarwar was shot by other security guards.” Gen. Raziq said.
Ahmad Wali Karzai’s death body was taken to Mirwais hospital and then he was taken back to home soon after his death.
Gen. Razi said, an investigation has been launched in this regard and several have been arrested in connection with the assassination of Ahmad Wali Karzai.
He said, it is early to say if foreign hands were involved behind Ahmad Wali Karzai’s assassination and said that some militant groups are struggling to undermine the stability of Kandahar and Afghanistan by carrying out such attacks.
Toryalai Weesa, governor of Kandahar province said, this is an unforgettable incident for the people of Kandahar province.
He also said, Ahmad Wali Karzai was a well known personality and played a key role role in Kandahar’s security, reconstruction and good governance.
The governor further added, “Karzai’s efforts in maintaining security and peace in the region is unforgettable and will be remembered by every Afghan.”
On the other hand, Taliban militants have claimed the responsibility behind Karzai’s assassination.
In a statement released by Taliban militants said, Mohammad was recruited by this group to carry out the attack on Ahmad Wali karzai.
The statement further added, Mohammad Sarward son of Mawlawi Sultan Mohammad was originally a resident of Zakir Sharif area of Kandahar city.
Taliban militants have claimed that this is enormous achievement for them during the past ten years.
