17 Million Afghans Face Acute Food Insecurity, U.N. Warns

The World Food Program (WFP) reports that one-third of Afghanistan’s population is facing severe hunger due to ongoing economic challenges.

The World Food Program (WFP) has stated that one in three people in Afghanistan is facing hunger, especially as Nowruz approaches.

On Friday, March 21, the WFP posted a message on social media highlighting the fact that Afghans traditionally celebrate Nowruz by preparing “Samanu,” a special dish, but many of them no longer have enough food to do so. The WFP emphasized its efforts to provide essential food to Afghan families in need.

The organization urged its supporters to continue their assistance in addressing the hunger crisis in Afghanistan. The situation has worsened due to widespread unemployment, growing poverty, and the Taliban’s harsh retribution and suppression, which have pushed the majority of the population into a dire state.

Many citizens report that under Taliban rule, not only have they lost hope for a better life, but they also face extreme hardship, struggling even to provide a meal for their children. This deepening crisis has left countless families in despair.

The WFP’s ongoing efforts highlight the critical need for continued international support, as Afghan families grapple with an ongoing hunger crisis amid political instability. Without sustained assistance, many more people in Afghanistan may face life-threatening challenges.
