Polio Vaccination Campaign to Begin Across Afghanistan on September 21

Afghanistan has launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign to immunize children under five and prevent the spread of this crippling disease.

The organization Polio-Free Afghanistan has announced the launch of a new polio vaccination campaign across the country. This nationwide effort aims to protect Afghanistan’s children under the age of five from the crippling disease. The campaign is a part of ongoing efforts to eradicate poliovirus from Afghanistan, one of the last two countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic.

On Sunday, April 20, Polio-Free Afghanistan stated on its official X/Twitter account that the vaccination campaign will begin the following day. The organization called on all families, particularly in vulnerable and high-risk communities, to ensure their children receive the oral polio vaccine during this campaign.

The campaign specifically targets children under five years old, who are the most susceptible to poliovirus and its life-threatening consequences. Health workers will be going door-to-door in different regions to administer the vaccine, a strategy that has been proven effective in past immunization drives.

However, the organization has not yet disclosed the exact duration of the campaign or the specific provinces where it will be conducted. This lack of information may affect the preparedness of some regions, particularly those with limited access to healthcare infrastructure.

It is important to note that the first confirmed case of poliovirus in Afghanistan for the year 2025 was recently reported in Badghis province. The detection of this case underscores the urgency of renewed vaccination campaigns and surveillance to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan remain the only two countries in the world where wild poliovirus is still circulating. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the persistent presence of the virus in both countries poses a global threat, as it could potentially spread to polio-free regions if not contained.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) continues to support polio eradication efforts in both countries by providing logistical assistance, vaccine supplies, and technical guidance. Insecurity, misinformation, and vaccine hesitancy have been among the major barriers hindering eradication in conflict-affected areas like Afghanistan.

Ending polio in Afghanistan will require coordinated efforts from international organizations, local health authorities, religious leaders, and community members. Ensuring consistent access to high-quality immunization services, particularly in remote and conflict-affected regions, is essential to achieve a polio-free future.

Meanwhile, the success of this and future campaigns hinges on public cooperation and trust. Community awareness, parental commitment, and government transparency in implementation are vital components in breaking the transmission chain of poliovirus once and for all.
