Iran Human Rights Organization reported on Saturday that authorities executed nine prisoners, including two Afghan nationals, in a series of coordinated executions across multiple prisons.
According to the rights group, the two Afghan citizens were executed in Karaj’s Ghezel Hesar Prison after being convicted on charges of “sexual assault.” Their names and further details have not been publicly disclosed.
The group said seven other Iranian prisoners were executed in Mashhad, Gonbad, Zanjan, Malayer, Nahavand, Qazvin, and Kerman prisons on various charges. It condemned the continued use of the death penalty in Iran and urged transparency in judicial proceedings.
Iran remains among the countries with the highest execution rates worldwide. Human rights organizations have accused the government of conducting executions without ensuring due process, fair trials, or independent legal representation.
In recent weeks, Iranian media have reported several executions of Afghan citizens, fueling concerns about the treatment of Afghan detainees under Iran’s judicial system. Advocacy groups have called on both Tehran and Kabul to address the issue urgently.
International human rights advocates warn that Iran’s growing reliance on capital punishment reflects deepening repression, as authorities use executions as a means of control rather than justice.
