Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, dismissed the idea of talks with South Korea, saying Pyongyang has “no interest” and “no reason” to meet.
State news agency KCNA reported on Sunday, July 27, that her remarks were in direct response to recent policies announced by South Korea’s new president, Lee Jae-myung.
Since taking office in June, Lee has reversed several of his predecessor’s hardline policies toward the North, signaling a softer approach to engagement.
Despite this, Kim Yo-jong declared that inter-Korean relations have “irreversibly moved beyond the framework of ethnic unity.”
Her statement reinforces Pyongyang’s rejection of dialogue and reflects ongoing hostility despite Seoul’s attempts to reset ties.
North and South Korea have technically remained at war since the Korean conflict ended in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
Analysts warn that Kim Yo-jong’s remarks highlight the fragile state of relations and raise doubts over whether future diplomacy can break the long-standing deadlock on the peninsula.
