Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Will Not Reopen Until US Meets Seven Conditions

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will lead Tehran’s delegation for the signing of a peace agreement with the United States in Switzerland, Iranian officials said on Tuesday.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said the agreement is expected to be signed in Geneva on Friday, with follow-up negotiations beginning immediately afterward, according to Al Jazeera.

He said Ghalibaf will head the Iranian delegation, while U.S. Vice President JD Vance will lead the American team. The exact venue for the signing ceremony has not yet been announced.

The planned signing follows weeks of negotiations between Washington and Tehran, reportedly mediated by Pakistan, which resulted in a preliminary understanding aimed at ending months of confrontation and opening a path for broader diplomatic engagement.

The emerging U.S.-Iran deal is expected to focus on maintaining a ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and launching further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief. Officials from both sides have described the agreement as the first step toward a more comprehensive settlement.

Reports have also indicated that Washington is considering support for a proposed $300 billion private investment fund for Iran, contingent on Tehran’s compliance with future commitments and progress in nuclear negotiations. U.S. officials have said any economic benefits would be phased and linked to implementation of the agreement.

The accord has drawn mixed reactions across the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled continued concern over the deal, arguing that pressure on Iran should not be eased without stronger guarantees on its nuclear activities. Israeli officials have also maintained that Israel will continue to act independently against perceived security threats.
