According to reports, the Facebook social media website will not be banned in Afghanistan amid concerns that the website could be used to enflame tensions.
The issue was reportedly discussed the National Security Council (NSC) meeting chaired by Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Sunday.
Adela Raz, spokeswoman for President Hamid Karzai said the National Security Council (NSC) has rejected calls for Facebook to be banned.
The ministry of telecommunication and information technology also rejected that the Facebook social media webite will be banned.
This comes as earlier unconfirmed reports suggested that the website would be banned from Sunday afternoon.
Officials in the ministry of telecommunication and information technology of Afghanistan earlier had said that a number of ministers and officials have asked to take actions against the pages that formented ethnic and sectarian discrimination.
Nasrat Rahimi, spokesman for the ministry of telecommunication and information technology of Afghanistan, said different options are being tried to block the pages.
