Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had previously invited world leaders, including the President of China, to the Ukraine Peace Summit, recently stated that Russia is using Chinese diplomats to disrupt the summit.

In a report published by the Associated Press on Sunday, June 2, Zelensky said, “Russia is using China’s influence in the region and deploying Chinese diplomats to do everything possible to disrupt the peace summit.”

The Ukrainian President also implicitly called China “a tool in Russia’s hands” and added, “Unfortunately, it is regrettable that a powerful, independent, and great country like China is a tool in Putin’s hands.”

Switzerland initiated the Ukraine Peace Summit, which will take place in mid-June. Last week, Zelensky invited world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, to participate in the summit.

Russia has not been invited to this summit. Consequently, Mao Ning, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, announced on Friday that China’s participation in the summit is unlikely. China has called for a peace conference with equal participation from all parties, including Russia, which has not been invited.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson added, “There is still a significant gap between the arrangements for this summit and the Chinese side’s demands, as well as the general expectations of the international community.” This makes it difficult for China to participate in the summit.

After China officially rejected Zelensky’s invitation, he said at a press conference at the Shangri-La Dialogue, “Russia is using China’s influence in the region and deploying Chinese diplomats to do everything possible to disrupt the peace summit.”

The Ukrainian President also added, “This is not just support for Russia; it is essentially support for war.”

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun was also present at the Shangri-La Dialogue where Zelensky made these remarks, but no response has been issued yet.

The Associated Press reported that the Chinese Defense Minister, who had spoken before Zelensky, did not appear to be present in the conference hall during Zelensky’s speech.
