America vetoed the draft resolution of the Security Council for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations.

Britain and Switzerland abstained from voting on this draft, but 12 other members of the Security Council voted in favor.

The US has stated that the formation of a Palestinian state should be through direct negotiations between Israel and Palestinian self-governing bodies, not through UN mechanisms.

Israel has stated that it will not allow the formation of an independent Palestinian government and considers it a security threat.

The Palestinian self-determination movement initially sought full UN membership in 2011.

The report highlights that for a resolution to pass in this council, it needs at least nine affirmative votes and no veto from key nations including the US, UK, France, Russia, or China.

The resolution for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations was approved by the General Assembly in 2012.
