The US will establish two new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, and India will establish a mission in Seattle, according to a senior White House official who announced on Thursday.

Indian students received 125,000 visas last year, and after a 20% increase from the previous year, they are quickly approaching the status of the largest foreign student population in the US, according to a senior administration official.

The United States intends to open new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. India is likewise welcoming the 2023 opening of its consulate in Seattle and look forward to also announcing a new consulate in the United States,” the official said.

The US Department of State will launch a pilot initiative later this year to decide domestic renewals of some petition-based temporary work visas, including those for Indian nationals, to broaden the pool of applicants for whom this scheme would be used.

India has five consulates in the US, including one each in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta and its embassy in Washington.

The US embassy in New Delhi is one of the largest diplomatic missions in the world. According to its website, the embassy oversees the operations of four consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad. This is done to ensure the US-India relationship is strong across the nation.
