According to reports American special forces in central Maidan Warkdak province of Afghanistan have handed over their base in eastern Afghanistan’s Nirkh district to local Afghan commandos.
The transition of the military base to Afghan control was one of the main demands of president Hamid Karzai following allegations that their Afghan counterparts committed human rights abuses there.
A senior US military commander Maj. Gen. Tony Thomas quoted by Associated Press said, Afghan special forces have taken the Americans’ place and will work alongside local Afghan policemen to keep insurgents from using the area to attack the capital Kabul.
Maj. Gen. Tony Thomas who is the top US special operations commander in Afghanistan said that U.S. commandos will continue to operate throughout the rest of Wardak province.
Afghan officials yet to comment regarding the reports.
