The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West met with UAE officials to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, including the resurgence of terrorism, the deterioration of rights, and the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

The US official visited the UAE after traveling to New Delhi, the capital of India, to discuss with officials in Abu Dhabi the situation in Afghanistan as part of his travels to other regional nations with an interest in Afghanistan.

West, in a tweet on Thursday, December 18, stated that he “discuss[ed] shared interests in Afghanistan, including protection of Afghans’ fundamental rights, economic stabilization, guarding against re-emergence of terrorist threats, and robust humanitarian response,” with the UAE officials.

The US envoy noted that his country and the UAE will continue to collaborate in Afghanistan on mutual priorities such as supporting investment-attracting policies and getting Afghan girls back in secondary schools, as they have been denied of receiving an education since the group assumed control in Afghanistan last year.

“The UAE is playing an important role, active in diplomacy, a long-time hub for Afghan businesses looking to grow economy & has important ties with many communities of influence,” West said.

He also stated that he has met with Mullah Mohammad Yaqoub Mujahid, the acting Defense Minister of the rolling government in Afghanistan, to discuss the situation of women, and girls and the deterioration of human rights in the country.

On his meeting with Mullah Yaqoub Mujahid, the US special representative stated that “the country’s economic & social stability & the Taliban’s domestic & international legitimacy depend enormously on their treatment of Afghanistan’s mothers & daughters.”

Thomas West’s visit to the UAE comes at the same time as several other prominent figures, including Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, and some officials of both the past and current Afghan governments, which raises the prospect of intra-Afghan talks.
