The 1,484,900 million doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccine donated by United States arrived in Kabul and was handed to the Ministry of Public Health today.

The amount of jabs is part of larger donation of 3.3 million doses pledged by US to Afghanistan and rest of the doses of vaccine will be donated in second consignment.

US embassy based in Kabul in a statement said that the vaccine was donated through COVAX program-UN backed initiative to distribute corona vaccine in poorer countries. The statement reads that the donation implies US continued support and assistance to the people of Afghanistan.

UNICEF representative in Afghanistan Herve’ Ludovic De Lus commended the aid from US and called on other developed countries to step up the vaccine sharing mechanism to contain the pandemic worldwide.

The vaccine doses arrive at a time when Afghanistan is grappling with third wave of corona virus which is infecting nearly 2000 people and takes the lives of around 100 more on daily bases.

Black fungus is another grave matter of concern of which around ten cases are recorded in Afghanistan mainly in Kabul.

US now becomes third country after India and China who provide corona vaccine doses with the war-torn country already grappling with surge in violation by Taliban.
