The President of the United States has once again emphasized that “Afghanistan will not be unified” and stated that “it is highly unlikely that anyone can unite Afghanistan.” He had previously made similar remarks to justify the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan.

On Thursday, May 22, President Joe Biden, during a joint press conference with the President of Kenya, said that Afghanistan is “known as the graveyard of empires” and that the possibility of this country being unified is very low or, as he put it, “highly unlikely.”

In June 2022, shortly after the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan, Mr. Biden defended what was described as a chaotic withdrawal with significant consequences, using the same reasoning.

His argument then was that Afghanistan does not have the capacity to be unified, or as he said, “Afghanistan is not predisposed to unity.”

In June 2022, during a press conference, Biden asked the attendees, “If you think anyone can unite Afghanistan under a single government, raise your hand?”

The idea that “nation-building in Afghanistan” would not succeed is another statement Biden made about Afghanistan, which also elicited reactions in Afghanistan on February 9, 2020, shortly before the signing of the Doha Agreement.

During a televised debate, Biden explained, “Regarding Afghanistan, I must say, I was completely opposed to the idea of nation-building in that country… That country can’t be unified; there is no way that country can be integrated.”

These remarks have consistently sparked reactions within Afghanistan. Most recently, Anas Haqqani, a senior member of the Taliban administration and half-brother of Serajuddin Haqqani, stated that such reasoning is incorrect.
