pakisani militants killed in kunarThe United States Department of States said Wednesday that the Taliban a group has a choice to participate in direct peace talks with the Afghan government as the 5th round of Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) group in Pakistan.

The State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters Ambassador Olson, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, was the representative of the United States in 5th QCG meeting.

He was responding to a question regarding any progress made during the 5th round of QCG meeting on Afghan peace process.

“I would just say again we continue to join President Ghani in calling on the Taliban to participate in direct peace talks,” Kirby said.

He also added that “They have a choice now, and we hope they make the right now.”

The 5th round of QCG meeting was organized amid pessimisms by the Afghan officials to obtain a satisfactory result from the meeting as the Taliban group has so far rejected to participate in the peace talks.

The QCG meeting participants called on the Taliban group during the 4th round of the talks to participate in direct talks.

However, the Taliban group rejected the QCG call and put forward the group’s conditions to participate in the talks.

The group also announced its spring offensive earlier last month despite the ongoing efforts to end the violence through reconciliation process and carried out a deadly attack in capital Kabul forcing the Afghan government to change its stance and start crackdown against the group.
