Following a virtual meeting of the foreign ministers of European Union member countries regarding the review of sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States has also announced that it will impose new sanctions on Iran, aiming to restrict Iran’s activities in line with what is perceived as regional instability.

Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to the White House, confirmed on Tuesday, April 16th, the likelihood of imposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran, stating that these sanctions will be implemented soon.

According to Voice of America citing Mr. Sullivan, “The United States will impose new sanctions on Iran in the coming days, targeting missile programs and unmanned aerial vehicles, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the Iranian Ministry of Defense.”

He also urged US allies to adopt a similar stance regarding Iran’s actions, especially its attacks on Israel: “We anticipate that our allies and partners will soon impose their own sanctions.”

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of EU member countries also discussed what is referred to as new sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran during a virtual session yesterday.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, also stated that his office is working on imposing sanctions on Iran, amidst widespread international condemnation of Iran’s recent attack on targets in Israel, accompanied by concerns about regional instability.

Janet Yellen, the US Secretary of the Treasury, had previously stated that “Iran’s actions threaten regional stability and could have a negative impact on the economy [in the region].”
