Unity govt was the only option amidst 2014 controversial elections: Abdullah

The Chief Executive of the Government of National Unity Abdullah Abdullah met with the Afghans based in Washington during his visit to the United States and held talks on the ongoing situation in the country.
The Office of the Chief Executive said Abdullah spoke regarding the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, reaffirming the government’s stance to hold the elections on the scheduled times.
He said the formation of the government of national unity was the only option to take the country out of a crisis amidst the controversial presidential elections in 2014.
However, Abdullah insisted that no other option would be acceptable to the Afghan nation apart from a clear and transparent election in the future.
He said the government of the national unity was formed at a time when the country was going through major challenges.
According to Abdullah, the security transition to Afghan forces, economic transition, and political transition from the previous government were the main challenges on the way of the new government.
He admitted that security remains a major for the Afghan people however the nation is optimistic regarding the future of the country.
The chief executive also added that the parliamentary elections would be held in 2018 while the presidential elections are scheduled for 2019 and both elections would be held on the scheduled times.
