United Nations Assistant Mission in Afghanistan in a press release said that UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons called on acting Minister of Information and Culture of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Khairullah Khairkhwa and discussed the closure of girls’ schools and restrictions on media outlets in Afghanistan.

During the meeting that was arranged at the Ministry on Saturday, April 9, 2022, the UN envoy Deborah Lyons urged immediate steps for all girls to return to schools.

The special representative also called on the acting Minister Khairullah Khairkhwa to engage Journalists in a constructive dialogue.

The concerns about schools’ closure and media restrictions come as the two sectors have been hit hard by the policies of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Secondary schools for girls are ordered to remain closed until further notice whereas Afghan media outlets and journalists are suffering from financial woes and repressive restrictions on transmission.

If not addressed, the rest of the media outlets will collapse in a matter of a few months.
