The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned a drone attack targeting the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, warning that the incident posed a serious threat to civilians, critical infrastructure, and the environment.
In a statement issued Tuesday, council members described the attack as a clear violation of international law and called for an immediate halt to attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure across the region.
The Security Council also expressed deep concern over rising regional tensions and stressed the importance of holding those responsible for the attack accountable.
Council members said all countries should cooperate closely to prevent similar incidents and strengthen the protection of sensitive and strategic infrastructure, particularly nuclear facilities.
According to Emirati authorities, the incident occurred after a drone struck a generator near the internal perimeter of the facility in the Al Dhafra region, causing a fire but no reported radiological impact.
Officials in the UAE said emergency teams quickly contained the fire and confirmed that safety systems at the nuclear facility continued operating normally following the incident.
The Barakah nuclear plant is the first operational nuclear power facility in the Arab world and is considered a critical part of the UAE’s long-term energy and infrastructure strategy.
Regional tensions in the Middle East have increased in recent months amid military confrontations, drone attacks, and concerns over the security of strategic energy and nuclear infrastructure.
