António Guterres said Monday that African nations have overcome the devastating legacy of slavery and colonialism and built unity and shared purpose despite decades of hardship.
In a message marking Africa Day, Guterres said the continent possesses growing global influence, strong resilience and major economic and human potential that deserve international recognition and support.
The UN chief added that the United Nations remains committed to working alongside African countries to build a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future for the continent.
He stressed that Africa’s long-term stability and development are important not only for Africans but also for global peace, economic growth and international cooperation.
Africa Day is observed annually on May 25 to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, now known as the African Union.
Many African countries continue to face challenges linked to poverty, armed conflict, climate change, debt crises and food insecurity despite significant economic and demographic growth in recent decades.
The United Nations and international financial institutions have repeatedly called for greater investment, fair trade access and climate support to help African economies achieve sustainable development goals.
