Ukraine’s interior minister and other high-ranking officials have been killed in a helicopter crash in a suburb in Kyiv on Wednesday, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ihor Klymenko, chief of Ukraine’s National Police stated that among those high-ranking individuals killed in the horrific incident included the Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi, his deputy Yevhen Yenin and State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Yurii Lubkovych.

Monastyrskyi is the most senior Ukrainian official to have died since the start of the war with Russia on February 24, 2022. Ukrainian reports said those on board the helicopter included six ministry officials and three crew.

The helicopter crashed in Brovary, an eastern suburb of the Ukrainian capital, resulting in the death of three children as the crash took place near a kindergarten, Klymenko said. Three children were among the dead and 15 others were among the 29 people taken to the hospital.

National police chief Ihor Klymenko wrote on Facebook that the helicopter belonged to Ukraine’s state emergency service, while other officials said it appeared to be a French Super Puma aircraft.

It is still not confirmed whether the crash was an accident or a result of war with Russia, although, there has been no fighting in Kyiv in the recent past.

Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelensky was extremely emotional with tearing eyes before attending a World Economic Forum session in Davos, Switzerland.

Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukraine war in February, it is the first time a group of high-ranking Ukrainian authorities die in a helicopter crash, a very tragic moment for the people of Ukraine.
