The U.S. Special Adviser for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Saturday met with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani amid reports Ambassador Khalilzad has met with the Taliban political leaders in Qatar as part of his tour to regional countries for the revival of Afghan peace talks.
The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said Ambassador Khalilzad presented a report regarding his recent trips to the regional countries and emphasized that the United States is prepared for an all-out support to an Afghan-led peace process and efforts are underway in this regard.
No further details have been given regarding the briefing made by Ambassador Khalilzad regarding his recent trips.
In the meantime, a source privy of the development has told The Wall Street Journal that Ambassador Khalilzad on Friday met with the Taliban political leaders in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The source has not disclosed further information in this regard and it is yet not clear which important topics were discussed during the meeting.
This comes as senior U.S. State Department official had met with the Taliban political leaders in Qatar nearly four months ago.
