The U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad has met with the Russian officials in Moscow to discuss the ongoing efforts regarding Afghan peace.
According to local media repots, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Ambassador Khalilzad on Friday met with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and a presidential envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov.
The reports further added that the two sides held talks regarding the prospects to revive direct talks between the Afghan government and Taliban group.
The Russian officials have reportedly said that Moscow believes that the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan could only be resolved through peaceful talks and political settlement, emphasizing that a diplomatic approach would be in the interest of Russia and the region.
This comes as Ambassador Khalilzad had earlier met with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Pakistani officials during his trips to Kabul and Islamabad.
He is expected to travel to Turkmenistan, Qatar, and United Arab Emirates to hold talks regarding Afghan reconciliation.
