Two police officials were killed, and five others were injured in a terrorist attack in Khaber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank and Lakki Marwat districts, officials confirmed on Monday.
The police officials were deployed on census duty in Tank and Lakki Marwat districts and were targeted by the attackers, police and Rescue-1122 stated, Dawn reported.
In an armed attack by terrorists on a police van used to protect census workers in Tank’s Kot Azam neighbourhood, constable Khan Nawab was killed. In contrast, constables Shah Nawaz and Aslam Khan, Levie’s official Bismillah, Frontier Constabulary official Abdullah and driver Eid Jan were wounded.
During the attack, a fresh contingent of police reached the area, sealed and started a search operation. While the killed and injured officers were transported to the local hospital for treatment.
A separate attack by two attackers at Lakki Marwat’s Parwala village, next to the Sadar police station, resulted in the death of Constable Dil Jan, who was on census duty.
The banned militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Since November last year, the TTP has intensified its attacks and violent activities on Pakistani police officials nationwide, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. This has worsened law and order in the country amid an economic crisis.
According to the data, January 2023 has considered the deadliest month since July 2018, which claimed 134 people’s lives and 254 were injured in at least 44 militant attacks across the country.
