Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants attacked a police station on Tuesday night in Mianwali Punjab, following the deadly suicide bombing in Peshawar, resulting in the death of hundreds of people.

Although the attack was repulsed by the police in the early hours of Wednesday morning, it is the first terror attack of its kind in Punjab province. The insurgent group has frequently attacked police check posts and stations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and areas bordering Afghanistan since ending their unilateral ceasefire with the Pakistani government in November 2022.

Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr. Usman Anwar reported to official sources in the early hours of Wednesday that the banned TTP militant organization claimed the responsibility for the attack on a police station.

The gun battle started at 9 pm and lasted nearly two hours before the Mianwali police repulsed the attack, however, there has been no report on police casualties for the incident so far.

According to senior Punjab police officials, smugglers use the hilly terrains to bring arms, and narcotics on foot from Darra Adam Khel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the area allows militants and terrorists to operate freely.

Following the attack, Punjab Inspector General said that Counter Terrorism Department police and Elite Force has joined the operation. Meanwhile, a grand police operation will be launched in the area where insurgents disappeared when police chased them.

“We are also discussing the options to launch a massive search operation in the Mianwali district to trace the terrorists’ hideouts,” Dr. Anwar said. This comes following the deadly suicide attack at a Mosque in Peshawar resulting in the death of hundreds of innocent civilians. Terror incidents have unprecedentedly increased in Pakistan over the past couple of months, posing threats to the internal security of the country amid the grace economic challenges the country is going through at the moment.
