US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the conflict involving Iran was approaching its final stages and suggested that a possible agreement could be reached in the coming days, a development that could ease tensions, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reduce pressure on global energy markets.
Trump said the war in Iran could end soon, while highlighting the United States’ military capabilities and saying Washington has significant ammunition reserves. However, he added that the US would continue efforts to expand weapons production and strengthen its military stockpiles.
The US president had previously suggested that a deal with Iran could be announced within the week. He said such an agreement could pave the way for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.
However, key issues remain unresolved. Reports indicate that possible negotiations include discussions over the US blockade of Iranian ports, with any agreement potentially depending on how the issue is addressed.
Iran has said it wants to maintain a level of control over the Strait of Hormuz and would not return the waterway to previous conditions in which commercial vessels passed through without restrictions.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a critical global trade route through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies and a significant share of liquefied natural gas shipments pass. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway can quickly affect oil prices, increase transportation costs and add pressure to the global economy.
While Trump has expressed optimism about a potential agreement, no final deal has been announced, and major differences between Washington and Tehran remain over security, maritime control and Iran’s regional role.
