The US President Donald Trump has formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel instructing the Department of State to shift the US embassy from Tel Aviv.

“Today we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” he said.

Trump further added that Washington still supports a two-state solution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict, if approved by both sides.

The United Nations and European Union have expressed concerns regarding the President Trump’s decision with eight of the fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council calling an urgent meeting on the US decision by the end of the week.

Some of the close allies of the United States including France and United Kingdom have also concerns regarding the decision of President.

In the meantime, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemned the US decision and in a statement said President Trump’s announcement was “unjustified and irresponsible”.

However, the President of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the announcement regarding Washington’s decision by his US counterpart and said Israel was profoundly grateful to President Trump.

“Jerusalem has been the focus of our hopes, our dreams, our prayers for three millennia,” he said in a Twitter post.
