The U.S. President Donald Trump and the Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani discussed the Taliban-led violence and the release of prisoners in Afghanistan.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Qatari leader Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani agreed in a phone call on Wednesday on the importance of the Taliban reducing violence in Afghanistan, the White House said in a statement.

The statement further added that the two leaders also agreed on the importance of continuing discussions on prisoner releases in Afghanistan, according to Reuters.

This comes as the Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant during the recent weeks amid ongoing efforts to find a negotiated political settlement to end the conflict in Afghanistan.

The Afghan government has released of Taliban prisoners following the signing of the U.S.-Taliban peace deal which was signed late in February with an aim to pave the way for intra-Afghan talks, ceasefire and reduction of troops.
