After the recent violence in Afghanistan, Hugo Shorter, Chargé d’Affaires of the UK Mission to Afghanistan in Doha, declared that the UK does not support those seeking political change using violence.

In a statement released on 19th June, the UK Chargé d’Affaires stated that “any activity inciting violence for political purposes, in Afghanistan” will not be supported by the UK.

Not only that Shorter declared that the UK does not support violence for a political change, the statement also reads that the UK discourages any sort of violence.

While stating that “violence of any kind is not in Afghanistan’s interests”, the Chargé d’Affaires of the UK Mission to Afghanistan also reiterated that violence in not in the interest of the international community as well.

The recent statement by the UK government signals that the international community is still open for a dialogue and peaceful engagement with the Taliban’s de facto interim administration.

Previously, Nasir Ahmad Andisha, the previous government’s former senior official, at the UN Human Rights Council Interactive Dialogue, stated that the international community had concluded that Taliban dialogue was impossible as a result of the Taliban’s behavior over the previous 10 months.

According to him, dialogue with the Taliban is nothing more than a “dead end” and “deep disappointment”.

The UK government statement comes at a time when the National Resistance Front (NRF) forces shot down a helicopter of the Taliban forces in northern Afghanistan, Panjshir province.

According to some political analysts, the recent statement by the UK government eliminates the prospects of the NRF being supported by the UK.
