A 17-year-old Thai girl was allegedly killed by an Australian tourist after meeting him in the resort city of Pattaya, police said, in a case that has shocked Thailand and renewed concerns about the safety of young women in the country’s tourism hubs.
Thai police said the teenager met 55-year-old Australian national Simon Peter Carmen on a Pattaya beach on Wednesday night before accompanying him to his apartment. Investigators allege that he strangled the girl during the early hours of Thursday following an argument.
The victim’s body was discovered two days later inside a large suitcase abandoned in tall grass near a railway line, not far from the beach. Thai immigration police arrested Carmen at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport while he was allegedly attempting to leave the country.
Police in Pattaya said the suspect had made a partial confession, claiming he did not intend to kill the teenager but strangled her during a dispute. He has been charged with murder, concealing and moving a body, and offences related to abducting a minor. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence, life imprisonment or the death penalty under Thai law.
Security camera footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed the pair entering the apartment building together at about 3:35 a.m., while later footage showed the suspect pulling a large suitcase believed to have contained the victim’s body.
The victim, described by local media as the only child in her family, had travelled to Pattaya only days before the incident. Her family became alarmed after seeing reports about the abandoned suitcase and later confirmed her identity.
The killing has drawn widespread attention across Thailand, where authorities have intensified investigations into violent crimes involving foreign visitors. Pattaya, one of Thailand’s busiest tourist destinations, has long struggled with crime linked to its nightlife and entertainment industry despite repeated government efforts to improve security and protect visitors and local residents.
The case has also renewed debate over the protection of children and young people in areas associated with commercial sex and human trafficking. Thai authorities have pledged to continue strengthening law enforcement against exploitation and violent crime while expanding measures to safeguard minors in major tourist centres.
