A teacher at a school in southwest France was stabbed to death by a teenage student on Wednesday during a session, the regional prosecutor reported.
The student, 16, attacked the 52-year-old Spanish teacher with a knife while she was instructing a lesson at the school in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a beach resort.
Despite receiving immediate care on the spot, she died from her injuries, according to Bayonne prosecutor Jerome Bourrier to AFP. He continued by saying that the student had been taken into custody.
French Education Minister Pap Ndiaye said he was “extremely upset” by the teacher’s passing and would go to the scene.
“I can barely imagine the trauma that this represents at a local level and more generally on a national scale,” said government spokesman Olivier Veran.

Though there have been rare cases in France, concern has been growing about the security of teachers. Several attacks have been recorded in the country, such as the October 2020 killing of Samuel Paty, in 2014, a 34-year teacher was stabbed to death, and the attacks carried out in 2012 killing a teacher and three pupils shot dead.
