At least eight Taliban militants, including the group’s shadow district chief were killed following an operation by Afghan national security forces in Badakhshan.
According to local government officials, the operation was conducted in Argo district on Monday.
Provincial police spokesman, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai said Taliban shadow district governor Mawlavi Alauddin was killed along with seven others during the operation.
Ahmadzai further added that the operation is still being conducted as more insurgents have been trapped in the area surrounded by Afghan security forces.
He confirmed Afghan national security forces have not suffered any casualties during the operation.
The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the report so far.
Badakhshan is among the relatively volatile provinces in northeastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are actively operating in a numberof its districts.
At least four policemen were killed and 17 others were taken hostage following Taliban attack on Afghan forces check posts in Wardoj district last week.
