Authorities from the Taliban Ministry of Higher Education said that the ministry had reconsidered paying university professors studying abroad.

Professors who are sent to the regional countries to further their education and advance their capacities will now receive compensation.

The Taliban Ministry of Higher Education’s spokesman, Ahmad Taqi, announced in a tweet that the ministry had made a decision favoring the payment of professors’ salaries while they are sent to study abroad.

Previously, salaries were not paid to professors who were sent to the surrounding countries to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in order to advance their education and professional development.

The Taliban government’s commission for controlling organizations and salaries recently decided to cut the compensation of professors and government employees who are sent abroad to further their education.

While the salary ranges for public university professors in Afghanistan, according to themselves, are meager, the cash-strapped Taliban struggled to pay them and did not pay those pursuing education abroad.

However, the Taliban government’s Ministry of Higher Education spokesperson has stated that due to the efforts of this ministry and the Prime Minister’s “kindness,” the decision to cut off the salary has been revised and the salary of professors engaged in education will be implemented.

Professors previously told the media that they had exhausted all options for earning a living but had reached a dead end. Some others have reportedly left their teaching jobs to make a living in any way they can, including menial labor.
