A delegation of the political representatives of the Taliban group recently visited Indonesia to explore ways regarding the Afghan peace process.

A spokesman for the political office of the Taliban Muhammad Sohail Shaheen said “A delegation of the Islamic Emirate lead by the head of the Political Office – Mr. Sher Muhammad Abbas Stanekzai – made a visit to Indonesia from 12th-15th August 2018.”

Shaheen further added “The delegation of Political Office met with the Indonesian Vice President Mr. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, Minister for Foreign Affairs Mrs. Retno Marsudi and the Special Representative of the President of Indonesia for Afghanistan Mr. Hamid Awaludin and held discussions about achieving peace in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of foreign forces.”

“Similarly, views were also exchanged about bilateral relations,” he added.

This comes as efforts are underway for the revival of the Afghan-led and intra-Afghan peace talks.

The visit by the political delegation of the Taliban takes place weeks after Indonesia hosted an international conference of the religious scholars to discuss the Afghan conflict and reconciliation.
