According to local authorities in western Herat province, Shindand district mayor was shot dead by Taliban militants on Friday night.
A local government official speaking on the condition of anonymity said Abdul Salam mayor of Shindand district was killed in front of his residential house by Taliban militants.
The source further added the assailant militants escaped the area after assassinating Shindand district mayor.
This comes as Taliban militants last week assassinated Ghazni provincial prosecution chief.
Taliban militants group claimed responsibility behind the assassination of Shindand district mayor however local police officials in Herat said the main motive behind the murder of Abdul Salam was unclear.
Shindand district is considered to be one of the volatile regions in western Herat province where militants are frequently carrying out insurgency activities.
