Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency has reported the seizure of 121 kilograms of methamphetamine from a truck carrying goods from Afghanistan, headed towards China. The drugs were hidden among precious stones on the Dushanbe-Kulma highway.
The Drug Control Agency revealed that the methamphetamine was being trafficked from Afghanistan to China through Tajikistan. This marks a significant bust along the major transit route between the two countries.
Zafar Samad, the head of Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency, emphasized that the production of synthetic drugs in Afghanistan has significantly increased. The seizure of synthetic drugs originating from Afghanistan in Tajikistan has increased by 59% in 2024 compared to previous years.
Part of the smuggled shipment was also discovered and seized in the Murgab region of Tajikistan’s autonomous Badakhshan province. This shows that Tajikistan is becoming a significant focus for drug trafficking from Afghanistan.
Previously, both Iranian and Tajik officials have raised concerns about the rising cultivation and trafficking of narcotics from Afghanistan. However, the Taliban government has denied reports regarding the increase in drug trafficking from the country.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) also reported that Afghanistan is the fastest-growing producer of methamphetamine globally. Trafficking of these substances to neighboring countries has increased by nearly 12%. This highlights the growing regional issue and the challenges authorities face in combating drug smuggling.
The situation demands greater international cooperation, as drug production and trafficking continue to escalate, affecting not just Afghanistan but the broader region. It is clear that efforts to curb the production and distribution of synthetic drugs need to be intensified.
