Switzerland is preparing to reopen its humanitarian aid office in Kabul by the summer of 2024.

The Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit intends to deploy four members to work in the Afghan capital.

Local employees are expected to join the office, as confirmed by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman, Léa Zürcher.

The presence in Kabul will help better understand the situation on the ground and improve project monitoring and coordination with other donor countries.

The office will not provide consular services, and Afghan visa applications will still be processed at the Swiss embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Detailed security measures have not been disclosed, but they will aim to minimize risks in the complex security environment.

Switzerland had a cooperation office in Kabul until August 2021, which closed after the Taliban takeover and the withdrawal of Western allies.

The new office is planned to be established at the previous location in the former “Green Zone” of Kabul, where many Western embassies were once located.
