According to the local government officials, the detained commander has been identified as Qari Amandullah who is also famous as Qari Khalid.
A local security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the commander was arrested by Afghan intelligence – national directorate of security (NDS) operatives.
The official further added that the arrest was made following a gun battle which continued for almost 15 minutes.
The detention of the suspected ISIS commander comes as there are concerns regarding the growing influence of the terrorist group in Afghanistan, specifically among the university students.
The Islamic State group is not believed to have operations in Afghanistan. However, insurgents belonging to a faction of the Hezb-e-Islami led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said earlier in September that they consider to join the Islamic State militants who are currently fighting in Syria and Iraq.
There have been growing concerns regarding the growth of extremism in educational institutes, specifically in Kabul university amid fears that the insurgent groups have infiltrated among the university students to hire them for insurgency activities in the country.
A group of individuals were also arrested by Afghan security forces who were apparently supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in capital Kabul nearly two months ago.
According to the security officials, the individuals were writing slogans in support of Islamic State in the walls of Kabul university.
