At least nine people were killed and twenty five others were wounded in a suicide attack in Lahore city in Punjab province of Pakistan.

According to the security officials, the incident took place late on Wednesday night in the vicinity of Raiwaind area located in the outskirts of the city.

Deputy Inspector General Operations Dr. Haider Ashraf has said the incident took place after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives close to the police forces.

He said a senior police official, deputy superintendent, was also present in the area when the incident took place.

The security officials have said at least five policemen and four civilians were among those killed and at least thirteen policemen and 12 civilians have been wounded.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

In the meantime, reports indicate that a religious gathering was also underway in the city when the incident took place but Dr. Ashraf says the target of the attack was apparently the police forces.

Religious violence claims the lives of scores of people besides the terrorist attacks although the Pakistani officials are saying that there has been a sharp decrease in terrorist related incidents during the recent months across Pakistan.
