Senior Taliban leader killed in Helmand province

Afghan and coalition security force killed Taliban leader Mir Jan Lala during a security operation in Helmand province Monday, coalition officials announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by International Security Assistance Force, “Mir Jan Lala was responsible for providing intelligence to Taliban senior leadership for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.”

ISAF patrol seized nearly 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds) of homemade explosives and ammonium nitrate, along with improvised explosive device initiators and components, during a joint air and ground patrol in Zabul province Sunday, ISAF said following the statement adding that the patrol destroyed all cache items at the location.

In a separate operation Afghan and coalition force detained an insurgent during a security operation in search of a Haqqani senior leader in Paktiya province today, ISAF said.

During the operation, the security force also seized multiple firearms. Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the report.
