A senior government official was killed in an explosion in northern Parwan province of Afghanistan late on Tuesday night, the officials said Wednesday.

According to the local government officials, the incident took place late on Tuesday night in the vicinity of Charikar district, leaving the provincial education director dead.

Parwan Criminal Investigation Department Chief Farhad Hashemi confirmed the incident and said the explosion took place at around 11 pm local time.

He said the provincial education director Zalmai Shahid was on his way to his residence when an improvised explosive device planted on a roadside went off.

He said Mr. Shahid had participated in a religious ceremony and was returning when the incident took place.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Parwan is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where the Taliban insurgents are actively operating in some of its remote districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

Roadside bombings, suicide attacks, target killings, and other forms of terrorist attacks are often reported from the restive districts of Parwan.

This comes as the Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the group announced its spring offensive last month and vowed to carry out more attacks across the country.
