U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham on Monday declared his stance on expected reduction of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
Speaking from capital Kabul late on Monday, Senator Graham said “If President Trump decides in the next few weeks to reduce our forces below the 12,000 we have, I could support that.”
Senator Graham further added “The Afghan security forces are getting more capable. As they achieve capability, the number of U.S. forces necessary can go down.”
According to Senator Graham, President Trump may announce troop drawdown from Afghanistan before the end of the year.
Reports emerged last week suggesting that the administration of President Donald Trump intends to announce the withdrawal of more than 4,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
The former and current U.S. officials privy of the development have told NBC News that the Trump administration intends to announce the draw down as early as next week.
The officials further added that the withdrawal would leave between 8 to 9 thousand troops in Afghanistan.
