A UK-based think tank has warned that Russia is working to increase its ability to destabilize European countries while also extending its influence in the Middle East and Africa. This poses a strategic threat to NATO, especially as member nations are primarily focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Researchers at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) have released a comprehensive report urging Western nations to step up efforts in countering Moscow’s unconventional warfare tactics to effectively push back against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) states that Russia’s incursion into Ukraine demonstrates Moscow’s interest in “crisis-making.” The think tank emphasizes that Western countries must act to contain Russia and prevent its use of unconventional weapons.

“As the war in Ukraine protracts, Russia has an interest in creating crises further afield,’’
Authors Jack Watling, Oleksandr V. Danylyuk, and Nick Reynolds pointed out the Balkans as a region ripe for mischief.

“Russia also has an active interest in destabilizing Ukraine’s partners, and with a slew of elections forthcoming across Europe there is a wide range of opportunities to exacerbate polarization,’’ the authors stated.

Researchers claim that Russia aims to penetrate Africa and maintain an active presence in the Middle East.

Founded in 1831, the institute released its latest report on the eve of the second anniversary of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

This report comes amid Vladimir Putin’s recent interview with an American journalist, where he stated that his country seeks peace with Ukraine. However, Kyiv has not yet agreed to discuss ending the conflict.
