Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, says that the first step towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state should be taken by the Arab League.

Mr. Lavrov stated that he has met and held discussions with the leaders of many Arab countries and learned that all of them are determined to establish an independent Palestinian state.

Mr. Lavrov, on Thursday, 25th January, during a press conference in New York, stated that Russia also supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and firmly advocates for creating a mechanism to resolve the Palestinian crisis.

The Russian Foreign Minister, however, emphasized that this mechanism should be adopted through the mediation of regional countries and primarily by the Arab League member states.

President Joe Biden of the United States had previously mentioned that Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, is not opposed to all possible solutions for the formation of two states, Israel and Palestine.

However, Benjamin Netanyahu rejected President Biden’s statements and stressed that Israel would maintain security control over Gaza after the destruction of Hamas.

In response to these statements, the Russian Foreign Minister said, “We are concerned about Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements that suggest there is no talk of establishing a Palestinian state.”

Mr. Lavrov emphasized that all pro-Palestinian factions should unite and decide on the future government of Palestine.
