The Russian Ministry of Defense has announced the exchange of 195 Ukrainian prisoners for 195 Russian military prisoners.
According to the Associated Press, on Wednesday, January 31, it was reported that these 400 prisoners of war were exchanged as part of an agreement between Kiev and Moscow.
Despite tensions, including the recent crash of a Russian military transport plane near the Ukraine border on January 24, some Russian officials have openly criticized the future exchange of prisoners.
Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the release of 207 Ukrainians in this exchange in a message on his official page.
President Zelensky stated, “Both combatants and civilians, we must bring them all back; we are working on this matter.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously reported the crash of an IL-76 military transport plane with 65 Ukrainian prisoners on board, along with crew and security personnel, in the “Belgorod” region.
It’s worth noting that since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, hundreds of military prisoners have been exchanged between the two sides.
The prisoner exchange remains a significant development in the ongoing tensions between the two nations.
