roadside bomb explosion afghanistanA municipality worker was killed following a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan on Sunday.

According to local government officials, the incident took place around 11:30 am local time in Mirwais Meena road in Kandahar city.

Provincial governor spokesman, Pervez Najib confirming the report, said the explosive device went off while the municipality worker was busy with the irrigation of the roadside gardens.

Kandahar is among the restive provinces in southern Afghanistan where Taliban and other insurgents are actively operating in its various districts.

Taliban militants frequently use improvised explosive device (IED) to target Afghan and coalition security forces which normally lead to civilian casualties.

In the meantime, local officials said it is yet not clear if the explosive device was planted by anti-government armed militant groups or it was a remnant of explosives from the civil war times.

No group including the Taliban militants has so far commented regarding the incident.
