Indian actress Rani Mukerji has received an honorary doctorate in literature from Australia’s La Trobe University in recognition of her nearly three decades in Indian cinema and her advocacy for women, children and marginalized communities.

La Trobe University honored Mukerji for her contribution to Indian cinema and her wider social impact. In remarks following the award, Mukerji described the recognition as one of the most humbling moments of her life and reflected on how cinema had helped her pursue her ambitions since she entered the industry as a teenager.

Mukerji said she did not have a clear career plan when she began acting but focused on doing her work to the best of her ability. She said she has often chosen films based on stories that mattered to her, had something meaningful to say and could inspire or empower audiences.

The actress also said she had sought throughout her career to represent strong Indian women and girls through her roles and to support stories connected to real social issues.

Mukerji described the honorary doctorate as a new source of motivation to continue pursuing projects and causes she believes in. She said the recognition encouraged her to keep working for issues she considers important.

Production company Yash Raj Films congratulated Mukerji on social media, describing the honorary doctorate as a significant milestone after nearly 30 years in the film industry.

Mukerji is one of the best-known figures in Indian cinema and has appeared in numerous films during her career. Her work has also attracted audiences outside India, including in Afghanistan, where Indian films have traditionally enjoyed a large following.

The honorary doctorate adds an academic recognition to Mukerji’s career beyond acting, highlighting the broader cultural and social influence associated with her work. Her recognition of women, children and marginalized communities has increasingly formed part of her public profile alongside her film career.
