TalibanAt least seven Taliban insurgents including the group’s prominent leader were killed following a gun battle in northern Faryab province earlier today.

According to local security officials clashes between the Afghan security forces and the Taliban insurgents broke out around 9:00 am local time in Khwajah Sabz Posh highway.

Provincial police chief Gen. Mohammad Naeem said a prominent Taliban leader Qari Jamal was among seven killed during the gun battle with the Afghan security forces.

Naeem further added that ten Taliban insurgents were also injured who were taken away by the militants but the dead bodies of the insurgents were left in the area.

He said the incident took place in Dasht-e-Faizabad area of Sherin Tagab district where two members of the Afghan security forces were also injured.

The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the report so far.

Faryab is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militants are actively operating in its various districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

According to local security officials the Taliban militants were looking to block the highway when the gun battle broke out with the Afghan security forces.
